Sophie Hoyle is a London-based artist and writer who relates personal experiences of being queer, non-binary, disabled and part of the SWANA (South-West Asian and North African) diaspora to wider forms of structural violence. From the lived experience of psychiatric conditions and trauma (or PTSD), they began to explore the history of biomedical technologies and practices in relation to state and military surveillance and control, and possibilities for community-based alternative forms of care.
Hoyle has exhibited widely across the UK and internationally, with recent screenings and exhibitions at the ICA London, Cafe OTO, Grand Union Birmingham, and the Wellcome Collection, as well as festivals including PAF Olomouc, Kasseler DokFest, and LA Freewaves. Hoyle’s work has also been recognized through awards including the Jerwood Arts Bursary, Arts Council England’s DYCP Award, and the Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary.
